Meeting Minutes

February 26, 2012

ORWO meeting was held on Sunday, February 26 at 4:00pm on SKYPE.  Members in attendance were: President Tina Sanborn, Kristie Davis, Deborah (McKinney) Slaughter, Renee Cipriani, Marci Longenecker & Mary Anne Christie.  Two members of Michigan Republican Women joined us as they are working on a Michigan State-wide online club.  Ohio has the only Republican women state-wide club in the USA.
President Tina Sanborn introduced the speaker Christopher Maloney who is the Ohio Republican Party (ORP) Communication Director.  Chris brought us up to date on what is happening with the Republican presidential candidates and other campaigns in Ohio.  He spoke about the importance of winning the US Senate race with Ohio’s Republican candidate Josh Mandel against incumbent Sherrod Brown.
We experienced an outage with SKYPE but Chris was at the ORP office so he gave us a number to call to use the ORP conference line to finish the meeting.
During the Q&A, Marcie Longenecker questioned Chris why the primary ballot asks for one to vote for district & at large delegates for the presidential candidates and not the candidate.  Each State is designated a certain number of delegates.    Ohio awards the sixty-six delegates it has been allocated from the RNC in a proportional manner between the districts & at large to the candidates.  The presidential candidate needs 1,144 delegates to win the GOP nomination at the convention.
The minutes were accepted as written.  The treasurer’s report was accepted as written & filed for audit.
Tina Sanborn gave an update on her position as the newly elected school board member of the West Clermont School District.
Marcia Longenecker, who is Josh Mandel’s southwest district coordinator, gave an update on the changes that State Treasurer Mandel has achieved since taking office.
Mary Anne Christie gave an update on the Nov. 2010 election of John Williams who ran for Juvenile Court judge.  The federal suit is still not settled.
The next meeting is Sunday, April 15 at 4:00pm on Skype.  President Sanborn will place the call from Skype to the members who have given her a SKYPE address.  If you want to join us, then email your SKYPE address to Tina Sanborn at tsanborn98@fuse.net  A request has been made to have a speaker from the State Senate to give us a State of the Senate address.
Meeting was closed at 4:40 pm.

Meeting Report

February 26, 2012

The owo meeting on Sunday had a few clichés but we had an outstanding speaker with Christopher Maloney, Ohio Republican Party Communication Director.  Chris updated us on the presidential & Josh Mandel US Senate race.  Marcie Garrison asked for an explanation of the ballot as there are 2 places to vote for your choice of the presidential candidates.  You are actually voting for the district and the at large delegates for the president.  I will ask Chris to email the explanation to all of you.
We had the Republican women from Michigan on the SKYPE meeting with us.  They are organizing a state wide online club.  We are the only state-wide club in the USA so it is a work in progress to work out the ability to see one another and discuss topics.
Tina Sanborn, ORWO president was also recently elected to the West Clermont Board of Education and updated us on her progress to this board.  Once again there is the old approach to develop programs & policies as well as the new approach.  Marcie who is Josh Mandel Southwest District member updated us on his office.  Josh is having a reception with US Senator Marco Rubio from Flo. On Tuesday, March 13 at the Crowne Plaza North 11320 Chester Rd. at 9:00 am.  General Seating is only $25 & reserved seating is $100.  Please attend if possible.  Question email  marcie.garrison3@yahoo.com
Mary Anne Christie discussed the status of John Williams who ran for Juvenille Court judge in the Nov. 2010 election.  That federal suit is still not settled.  John was appointed to another juvenile court judge position by the Governor.  He has to run for that office in November.  His opponent from the 2010 campaign has filed for the same judgeship as John was appointed.
Our next meeting is April 15 at 4:00pm.  We have asked State Senator Shannon Jones to be the guest speaker.  Hope you can all join us.

Mary Anne Christie

PS  Chris…will you respond to all with the explanation of the presidential ballot

Here is the answer:

Ohio awards the sixty-six delegates it has been allocated from the RNC in a proportional manner.  Sixty-three of those delegates are up for grabs on Super Tuesday.  Forty-eight delegates are known as “District Delegates” and are awarded winner-take-all by congressional district.  There are sixteen congressional districts in Ohio and three delegates are allocated to each district.  For example, if Mitt Romney receives a plurality of the vote in the 10th Congressional District on Super Tuesday, he will receive all three of the delegates allocated to that district.  Rick Santorum failed to qualify for delegates in three Ohio congressional districts.  Therefore, nine of Ohio’s delegates are off the table for Senator Santorum.
The remaining fifteen delegates awarded on Election Day, known at “At Large Delegates,” are allocated proportionally to each candidate based upon their share of the statewide vote.  In order to qualify for At Large Delegates a candidate must receive at least 20% of the statewide vote.  If any presidential candidate receives more than 50% of the statewide vote, they receive all fifteen At Large Delegates.
If you've been counting delegates, you might have noticed that we only explained how 63 of the 66 are awarded. That's because Ohio has three more delegates who get to back any candidate they choose. They are members of the Republican National Committee: two RNC committee members (Jo Ann Davidson & Bob Bennett), and Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine.

Meeting Minutes

September 25, 2011

The third online meeting was called to order by President Kristie Davis at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 25, 2011 using the Skype website.  Members in attendance were Mary Anne Christie, Tina Sanborn, Amy Searcy, Deborah McKinney.  Special guest is Margaret Salow from the Michigan Republican Club.  Lyn Bliss, JoAnn Beamer, Stephanie Morgan and Treasurer Marcie Longenecker were unable to join in the meeting due to prior conflicts.

  1. Amy Searcy from the Hamilton County Board of Elections discussed Jennifer Brunner, Secretary of State, and the election laws.  Amy states you can register and vote the same day during “Dream Week”.  Early voting begins in Ohio October 4.  Amy told us about HB 194 which has not passed.  The Election Reform Process needs 231,000 signatures and they have until September 30, 2011, to submit their petitions.
  2. Amy Searcy talked about John Williams waiting for Federal due process of his Juvenile Court election which was held November, 2010.   Judge Dalott’s trial decision to be in as of October 7, 2011.
  3. Mary Ann Christie, states that the State Central Committee met in Columbus, OH.  The Primary election will be on March 6, 2012.  The petition deadline for filling is December 7, 2011.
  4. Amy Searcy told us that Debe Terhar, President of the Hamilton County Women’s Republican Club, is having a membership drive in her home. The cost is $25.00 for the membership drive.
  5. President Davis told us about a Candidates Night/Oktoberfest for the Hamilton County Republican Club on October 6, 2011 at the Maple Ridge Lodge at 5:30 PM.  Tickets are $20.

The next ORWO skype meeting will be held on Saturday, October 29 at 9:00 am.  If any members wish to join us on Skype, please contact President Davis at kldavis504@gmail.com with your Skype address.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 p.m.

ORWO Holds On-line Meeting

The first online meeting was called to order by President Kristie Davis at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2011 using the Skype website.  Members in attendance were Mary Anne Christie and JoAnn Beamer.  Secretary Tina Sanborn & Treasurer Marcie Longenecker were unable to join in the meeting due to prior conflicts.
Davis gave an update about the membership.  Discussions were on the following issues:

  1. Mary Anne Christie brought the members up to date on the Juvenile Court Judge race in Hamilton County.  Republican John Williams was elected Juvenile Court Judge in November.  The results of the votes were challenged by his Democratic opponent because a number of votes were cast in the wrong precinct.  The case is going to trial in federal court.  It is important because the decision on whether votes cast in the wrong precinct should be counted will have a major impact on future counting of votes.
  2. Mary Anne also discussed the SB5 and she said that the unions have delivered over 1,000,000 signatures to the Secretary of State office top place SB 5 on the November ballot.  Polling indicates that SB5 could remain if a strong campaign is mobilized by the Republican Party.  Vaughn Flasher has been appointed by the Governor to Chair the committee “Building a Better Ohio.”   This committee responsibility will focus on giving Ohioans a true snapshot of Senate Bill 5.
  3. There are approximately 8 million registered voters with the Democrats having a slight voter advantage.  It is estimated that the unions will raise $25 to $30 million dollars to defeat SB5.  Vaughn committee will be working to raise money to stop the repeal of SB 5 but we need every Republican to help.  If you can help in stopping the repeal of SB5, contact Vaughn at 614-370-5707.  If you want a speaker at a meeting to discuss SB5 go to the website www.betterohio.org
  4.  Ohio Health Care Bill (Obama Health Care) may also be on the November ballot.  Signatures are still being checked at the County Board of Elections but over 500,000 signatures were collected.
  5. There was also discussion about the new staff members that have been hired at the Ohio Republican Party: Executive Director Darren Bearson (email) , Communications Director Chris Maloney (email), Political Director Bruce Tague (email)  and Executive Assistant to the Chairman Gayle England (email).  All may be called at: (614) 228-2481
  6. JoAnn Beamer discussed the issues that will be facing the voters in Clermont County this fall.  Also, she noted that her son will be a candidate for Union Township Trustee in Clermont County.
The next ORWO skype meeting will be held on Thursday, August 25 at 8 p.m.  If any members wish to join us on skype, contact President Davis at ORWO@ohfrw.com with your skype address.

Meeting was closed at 4:30 p.m.

Meeting Report from Advisor Mary Anne Christie

A meeting was held with Parliamentarian Vivian Cosio, Treasurer Tina Sanborn and advisor Mary Anne Christie. We had the opportunity to review the website, get copies of the bylaws and the list of members. This is a unique and interesting group of women.  We determined that we need each officer listed below to write a three to five line paragraph to be placed on the orwo website.  It should include  where they live (no address), what line of work they are in and their company. Also, if they hold or have held a position in some other organizations. This material should be sent to Lyn Bliss by clicking HERE.
We will hold an election as soon as I have all the dues.
In a couple weeks Erin Ineman will be in charge of all website materials and "Go to Meeting".  She just lost one of her favorite uncles to cancer. Our prayers are with her during this devastating time.
Stephanie Morgan is with the US Embassy in Bogota, Colombia. She recently spent a few months in Afghanistan and Iraq. She will be our international representative and also help with the club's internet presence.
All dues should be paid through Pay Pal or by snail mail to Ohio Republican Women Online, c/o Ohio Federation of Republican Women, 211 South Fifth Street, Columbus, OH 43215. Please make check payable to OFRW but indicate this is for ORWO dues.  Regular member $25; Associate $10; Student $5 and Male Associate $30.

Thanks,

Mary Anne Christie
